A descendant of the Accompong Maroons is eager to be photographed by The Linx team
An exhibition in the making since the summer of 2007, The LINX Journey to Accompong,
will open on Sunday July 6, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Institute of Jamaica’s Lecture
Hall located at the corner of East and Tower Streets.
The LINX, a group of six individuals ages 13-19 from the Brent Council’s Youth Service,
travelled to Jamaica to interview and photograph descendants of the Maroon people
in Accompong, a group of the first free slaves in the Western hemisphere. The research
team visited after receiving £40,000 from Brent Council’s Youth Opportunity and
Youth Capital Funds in the UK to set up the project, pay for tutor fees and equipment
and travel expenses to Jamaica to research and gather content for the exhibition.

towards this exhibition for such a long time that it’s unbelievably exciting that
it’s almost here.”
The Exhibition which opens at the Exhibition Gallery of The Institute of Jamaica
is set to run from July 6th to July 31st and is open to the public Mondays- Thursdays
9:00 am to 4:00 pm and Fridays 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Curator of the Exhibition Jennie
Baptiste will also be hosting workshops with The LINX for young persons attending
