"Quake Memorabilia Mugs Presented to Bank of Nova Scotia"

"Quake" Mystique Mugs before the hot liquid was poured inThirty six of seventy two limited edition Collector’s items were presented to Heather Goldson, Vice President, Marketing at the Bank of Nova Scotia, by Vivian Crawford, Executive Director, Institute of Jamaica at a ceremony on Wednesday, January 23, 2008.

January 2007 marked the centenary of the Great Earthquake and Fire that destroyed the city of Kingston. In commemoration of this historic milestone, the Museums of History and Ethnography curated an exhibition titled, “Quake” during the period January 14 to June, 2007.

"Quake" Mystique Mugs after the hot liquid was poured inLike the Institute of Jamaica, the Bank of Nova Scotia was one of few pre-existing institutions at the time of the earthquake, having had a branch in Downtown Kingston since 1889, the IOJ since 1879.

In recognition of the centenary of the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1907, the Development and Public Relations Department of the IOJ whose responsibility it is to produce appropriate commemorative memorabilia approached the BNS for sponsorship of the stoneware mugs due to shared longevity in the community and as a celebration of triumph of the existence of the two institutions.

An elated Heather Goldson, (right) Vice President, Marketing at the Bank of Nova Scotia, views with admiration the "Quake" mystique mug, presented by Mr. Vivian Crawford, Executive Director of the Institute of Jamaica. The Quake Mystique mugs are appropriately suited as a commemorative earthquake memorabilia. The mugs have a patented colour surface, and through a thermochromatic sublimation process, the hidden clue or image, in this case, the image of the Ban k of Nova Scotia Building, 35-45 King Street is obscured when the mug is empty. However when hot liquid is poured into the mug, the colour code changes and the hidden message and image becomes clearly visible. On cooling, the mug returns to its original state.

Mr. Vivian Crawford, Executive Director, Institute of Jamaica, presenting the Quake "Mystique" Mug to Mrs. Heather Goldson, Vice President, Marketing at the Bank of Nova Scotia. The remainder will be on sale at the IOJ.
