TEMPORARY CURATOR (SOG/ST 7)
Job Purpose
To ensure the highest quality research and publications from the Division; to chart a course for the ongoing study and dissemination of information about Jamaica’s Cultural Heritage; and to assist in the creation of an environment conducive to research for both staff and visitors alike.
Key Responsibility Areas
• Undertakes major and specific research assignments on an agreed topic
• Assists with the definition of research areas and supervise the work of the curatorial staff
• Conducts and submits research for publication
• Assists with the planning and execution of research symposia and other scholarly events
• Contributes to scholarly discussion within research interests through participation in research symposia and other scholarly events representing the Division and the Institute of Jamaica
• Liaises with the public and members of similar institutions on matters related to the interpretation and presentation of Jamaica’s Material Culture
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
• Postgraduate Degree in Arts or Humanities (including Museum Studies)
• Two (2) years’ museum experience
• Proven track record of independent research and publication
• Supervisory management skills
EDUCATION OUTREACH OFFICER (SOG/ST 6)
Job Purpose
Under the general supervision of the Director, the Education Outreach Officer is responsible for the development of vibrant and engaging life long learning and schools education programmes based on the Museums collections for our audiences. The Education Outreach Officer should be able to plan and deliver a broad range of programmes for different levels of visitors/audiences.
Key Responsibility Areas
• Develops new and innovative learning programmes for the Division
• Co-ordinates learning programmes for School and Community Programmes (including specialist communities)
• Plans and coordinates the implementation of Education/Learning programmes for Museums satellites.
• Ensures visitor accessibility to Divisional offerings (this includes physical as well as psychological and programmatic access.
• Undertakes occasional research to develop Educational output of the Division
• Keeps abreast with new developments in museums education/learning and public access
• Communicates with audiences through various media including newspapers
• Formulates, executes and collate results of visitor survey instruments
• Prepares proposals for funding for educational projects and programmes
Minimum Qualification and Experience
• B Sc. or BA in History, Archaeology or Education (emphasis in History)
• Postgraduate degree Museum Studies/ Museology/ /Education or other similar training
• Three (3) years’ work experience in a Museum or similar organisation
EDUCATION OUTREACH OFFICER (SOG/ST 6)
Job Purpose
The Education Outreach Officer is responsible for the planning and administering of the Division’s educational programmes island wide and provides information on Jamaica’s natural heritage. The job includes, assisting with the coordination and implementation, of the Institute of Jamaica’s rural outreach programme.
Key Responsibility Areas
• Prepares quarterly position papers on documents and policies relating specifically to environmental education
• Develops project proposals for submission to funding agencies
• Researches current science syllabuses and develops programmes to assist in the teaching of certain science topics, relevant to natural history
• Initiates develops and conducts workshops, seminars, lectures, slide shows and field trips to students and the general public in collaboration with the Division's research staff. – linked to 2
• Prepares articles for inclusion in Jamaica Journal, the local press and other publications
• Prepares articles for inclusion on Institute of Jamaica’s website and intranet
• Researches and develops exhibit-related literature
• Attends conferences, seminars and workshops locally and overseas and presents papers and/ prepares reports on conferences etc. locally and overseas
Minimum Qualification & Experience
• Masters Degree in Education with undergraduate degree in the Biological Sciences or
• B.Sc. Degree in Zoology/Botany with a Diploma in Education and three (3) years’ related experience
MANAGER INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (MIS/IT 6)
Job Purpose
The Manager Information Technology will ensure that the Information Technology requirements of the Institute of Jamaica are achieved through programmed maintenance, monitoring and improvements to systems such as Human Resource ¬Information System, ACCPAC system, Institute of Jamaica Website and database systems for the collections such as SQL, CD-ISIS and Bio-link.
Key Responsibility Areas
• Develops specifications for the purchase, rental, lease, licensing or other acquisitions for all computer and other Information Technology related equipment and supplies
• Monitors the security of data processed in keeping with Government of Jamaica Access to Information Act to ensure integrity and reliability of computerized information systems, communication systems and office systems
• Monitors the access and availability of Microsoft Network Infrastructure
• Oversees the development of the Institute of Jamaica Website
• Analyzes system usage and prepares specifications for systems programme tasks that will enhance the Institute of Jamaica computing environment
• Formulates policies related to the use of Information Technology
• Defines equipment and material needs of software applications
• Supervises the installation and maintenance of computers and peripherals
• Monitors the licensing for all operating systems and application software
• Provides planning, consultation and advisory services to different divisions
Minimum Qualification & Experience
Masters degree in Computer Science or
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and Master’s Degree in related discipline
Three (3) years’ related work experience including managerial experience
