Institute Of Jamaica Musgrave Awards 2009


The year 2009 marks the 112th renewal year of the Musgrave Medal Awards and the 130th anniversary of the founding of the Institute of Jamaica.

The 2009 recipients of the Musgrave Awards are; Prof. Maureen Warner-Lewis, Professor Emerita, African Caribbean Language and Orature, formerly of the Department of Literatures in English at the University of the West Indies (UWI) for her contribution to Literature and Mr. Wycliffe Samuel Bennett for distinguished contribution to the development of the Arts in Jamaica and the Caribbean.

The 2009 Silver Musgrave medalists are; Mrs. Paulette Bellamy for her contribution to Music, Prof. Helen Jacobs for her work in Organic Chemistry, Mr. Kei Miller for Literature, Prof. Gossett Oliver for his work in Engineering and Mrs. Jean Smith for Arts Administration.

The Bronze medallists include environmental conservationists, Miss Wendy Lee and Mrs. Diana McCaulay, Mrs. Marguerite Vernon and Mrs. Rhona Welsh for Needlecraft.

Community service activist, Miss Courtney Foster is this year’s Youth Awardee. Miss Foster through her fundraising activities has provided financial support for financially challenged medical students at the UWI Mona since 1997.

The Musgrave Medals have over the years, particularly prior to the awarding of National Honours, served as a means of rewarding excellence to Jamaicans who have made significant contributions to society through their respective disciplines.

A Gold Medal is awarded for distinguished eminence in the fields of Literature, Science or the Arts, Silver for outstanding merit and a Bronze Medal for merit.

The Musgrave Youth Medal is awarded to young people between the ages of 15 and 30 who have shown outstanding scholarship, creativity and exemplary discipline in the fields of Science, Technology, Literature and the Arts.

The Musgrave medal has been awarded to celebrated icons of the society, including Louise Bennett- Coverly, Charles Hyatt, Kamau Brathwaite, Edna Manley, Marcia Griffiths, Carey Robinson, Oliver Samuels, Lorna Goodison, Erna Brodber and Prof. Rex Nettleford.
