ACIJ/JMB Launches CD-ROM on Afro-Jamaican religions
The African Caribbean Institute of Jamaica/Jamaica Memory Bank (ACIJ/JMB) recently launched its CD-ROM, Afro-Jamaican Religions: Kumina, Revival, Rastafari
at the Institute of Jamaica.
This CD-ROM which represents decades of research undertaken by the ACIJ/JMB on Afro-Jamaican religions was done in keeping in the mandate of the Division to “deepen public awareness of the contribution of African retentions to the Jamaican cultural ethos.”
Mr. Bernard Jankee, Director of the ACIJ/JMB, giving an overview of the CD-ROM says it forms part of the Division’s contribution to students sitting the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exam. The production of the CD-ROM was funded by a grant from UNESCO.
The CD-ROM examines among other aspects, the origins, beliefs and practices of the three religions. Text, illustrations and audio-visual aids are used in the presentation of the material on the CD-ROM.
It is hoped that the CD-ROM will serve as an interactive tool for both students and teachers.
The CD-ROM will be accessible in high schools, parish libraries across the island and the National Library of Jamaica. Interested persons can also access copies by writing to the African Caribbean Institute of Jamaica, 12 Ocean Boulevard, Downtown Kingston or by calling 922-7415.
