   Disaster Preparedness Month

Text Box: June 1-30, 2008
Flowchart: Alternate Process: What is a Natural Disaster?

A natural disaster is the result of a natural hazard (e.g. earthquake, volcanic eruption, or hurricane) which affects human activities. Human exposure is intensified by the lack of planning or lack of appropriate emergency management. This sometimes leads to financial, environmental and human losses. The resulting loss depends on the capacity of the population to support or resist the disaster, their resilience.

Why Observe Disaster Preparedness Month?

National Preparedness Month is observed in June to encourage Jamaicans to take the proper steps in preparing for disasters in their homes, businesses and schools.

In the midst of life the, it’s important that we take time out to learn about life emergencies like disasters. To learn about disasters is to help in minimizing the effects they can cause.
Flowchart: Alternate Process: The Situation
National economies have a limited capacity to support a recovery from a national disaster, with 40 per cent of the population under the age of 20 years. This creates a challenge in raising the capacity of vulnerable populations to respond effectively to local hazards.
No matter where we live, there are both natural and man-made hazards that we need to be aware of and to prepare for. We can at anytime experience earthquakes, wind storms, flooding, landslides, fire, volcanic eruptions, etc.  The important thing is to be prepared.
